The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation Fellowship is a great opportunity for government officials and professionals from developing countries to gain knowledge and skills in marine science, maritime affairs, and maritime law. This fully funded fellowship program will last for 9 months, with 3 months spent in New York and 6 months at a host institution in the USA.
Through this program, fellows will learn about international maritime law, key issues, and best practices. They will also gain experience working with the United Nations and develop their professional skills. Additionally, fellows will conduct research and write essays on a topic of their choice under academic supervision.
After completing the fellowship, fellows are expected to return to their home countries and use their knowledge and experience to help develop and enforce maritime policies and laws. They will also design and implement marine improvement projects to make a positive impact.

Eligibility Criteria for Fellowship in USA by United Nations Nippon Foundation 2024
- Your “Nomination and Recommendation Form” must be completed by a government official or other authorized person who can verify your work in relation to government maritime affairs and maritime law.
- Your proposed research and study program must directly assist in the formation and/or enforcement of maritime affairs and maritime policies and programs in your country.
- You must demonstrate the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
- You must be between 25 and 40 years old.
- You must have successfully completed your first university degree.
- Your professional position must enable you to contribute to policy formulation and/or implementation in your country, particularly in the area of marine sciences and science policy.
- You must be a mid-level professional from a national government agency in a developing state, or from another government or non-government agency directly involved in maritime affairs.
- You must be free of all non-association responsibilities throughout the fellowship period unless authorized by the Division.
